WHAT IS PMC?
PMC is microscopically powdered fine silver (.999) mixed with an organic binder made from corn, water and glycerin. It looks like rather uninteresting gray clay when you remove it from the package.
Treat it like earthen clay; sculpt it, roll it flat, texture it, make anything you can think of, and fire in a kiln. When the binder burns away you are left with a fine silver object, ready to be worn as jewelry.
Yes, this is a simplification of how PMC works, but imagine the simplicity of working with metal that sculpts like clay! At your kitchen table with a few inexpensive tools, you can create anything out of silver.
I heartily advise at least an introductory class in PMC, preferably 5-6 hours long, and working with an experienced instructor. Students new to PMC should learn joining, texturing, safe working habits, torch firing and kiln firing to make the most of this revolutionary material.
Continuing students benefit from more difficult projects and should take on the challenge of making their pieces more refined and well thought out.
Metalsmiths will be amazed at the options incorporating PMC into their repertoire of materials. PMC students can add metalsmithing skills to complete their ‘tool box’ of knowledge.
