ABOUT EMILY B. MILLER

I grew up in a house filled with art, paintings, drawings, books, and music; I didn’t realize that until I had to make a decision about college.

After one year at a community college, I made the commitment to study commercial photography. I learned so much about art, artists, and working in a creative field that I stopped taking pictures. Then I discovered jewelry making with beads. The last 13 years have been a revelation. Making beaded jewelry and jewelry made with PMC has taken over my life!  It is the act of making that makes creativity so worthwhile, so go make something!

On teaching:

Teaching is fascinating, watching the effect your words and actions have on another person. Following students efforts and seeing the creative process happen is so exciting. I’m constantly learning from students, finding new ways to explain or demonstrate a technique.

On personal work:

My personal work comes from a hidden place inside; it is hard to speak of inspiration that has strong emotion. To speak about my intimate thoughts would make me open and exposed, better to illustrate with beads, silver or a picture.  I may seem confident and sure of myself but I prefer a camera or piece of jewelry between you and me.

On tools:

There is a special connection to items held in the hand; useful tools are all around us.  Making tools is new for me, but an interesting way to use my creativity. I know that many new ideas will take shape with new tools.
